Project Goals

The Poweshiek Skipper Project has five primary goals.  They are:

1.  Recognize the unique value of O.  poweshiek to the State of Iowa, the City of Grinnell, and the Poweshiek County area.  The Poweshiek skipper is a legacy butterfly.  Involve people in the recognition and celebration of the species and its ties to the history of Iowa.

2.  Recognize the value of all of Iowa's biological diversity, particularly the small creatures that are frequently ignored.  The way we conduct ourselves in modern society eliminates many of these creatures from the environment and separates most of these creatures from our lives.  Involve people in the celebration of Iowa's butterflies, dragonflies, fireflies and other creatures great and small.

3.  Promote the conservation of O. poweshiek everywhere, but especially in Iowa.  Involve people in the conservation of the species.

4.  Promote the conservation of the original biological diversity of Iowa.  Involve people in the conservation of biological diversity, especially of the small, frequently ignored creatures.

5.  Promote the collection and storage of information about Iowa's biological diversity.  Promote public access to that information.  Promote the preparation of educational materials at all levels that deal with Iowa's biological diversity.  Involve people in the collection of information and preparation of educational materials.
