Crayfish

Crayfish are of course crustaceans, but it is interesting to note that there is a list of Iowa's species of crayfish.  It can be found at:

http://iz.carnegiemnh.org/crayfish/country_pages/state_pages/iowa.htm

Iowa has eight species.

The photograph to the right was taken along the trail at Pilot Knob State Park.  While crayfish are primarily aquatic species, some do occasionally get out on land or burrow into mud.  I do not know what species this one was.
