Zonitoides nitidus (O.F. Müller, 1774) Black gloss |
This snail is also known as Hylaina nitida and Zonites nitidus.
It is found in the northern Midwestern states--mostly those that border
the great lakes, but also including Iowa.
These snails were thick in a muddy area near Clear Lake, Iowa. They were on saturated logs on the wetland areas around the lake. |

Superficially they resemble the more common Z. arboreus, although they are somewhat larger and they lack the distinct whitish lower part to the foot. |
The umbilicus of Z. nitidus is slightly wider than that of Z. arboreus, being about 1/5 the width of the shell compared to 1/6th the width for Z. arboreus. |
